Work hardening by shot peening is an eco-friendly technology for hardening the superficial layer, explicable in terms of the imbalance occurring in the crystalline network of the plastically deformed material with a higher degree of deformation than the critical degree. Research conducted on this matter focussed on the alteration of nitrogen diffusion parameters attributable to the work hardening of the superficial layer of the steel test specimens. Work hardening followed by nitriding engenders an additional increase in hardness and wearing resistance with lower energy consumption as compared to the classic treatments.
