PAINTING WITH FIRE: MASTERS OF ENAMELING IN AMERICA, 1930-1980

Bernard Jazzar and Hal Nelson's long-term interest and scholarly approach to mid-century enameling has resulted in a landmark study of the subject in the United States, Painting with Fire, a large format, 288-page volume with more than 200 color images, was published as a companion to the traveling exhibition of the same name, organized by the authors during Nelson's tenure as director of the Long Beach Museum of Art. Jazzar and Nelson's publication offers the first fine color illustrations of enameilsts' work of the 1940s and 1950s, and is incalculably important for the return of these early works to the public consciousness. Painting with Fire is the first survey that explores the resurgence of enamel on metal as it developed within the mid-century American craft movement. The book's chronological division into early, middle, and late sections allows a clear path to illuminate the variety and progress in the field. The impressively broad focus of the study explores the work of 15 significant artists who advanced the medium. There is a chapter on each artist, and brief but informative biographies of 30 additional enamelists notable in the field.
