The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) is the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) publication that defines the standards for traffic lights, signs, pavement markings, etc., for streets, highways, pedestrian facilities, and bikeways in the U.S. The 2009 edition of the MUTCD officially replaced the 2003 edition with the publication of a Final Rule in the 16 December 2009 Federal Register (technically, the new version took effect on 15 January 2010). The 2009 edition incorporates many changes--the Federal Register notice discussing the revision has 135 pages--and one change involves metric measurements.
