AT SCHOOL WITH THE METRIC SYSTEM

Sally Mitchell is the winner of the 2009 James Bryant Conant award, the highest award given to a high school chemistry teacher by the American Chemical Society. Sally is a chemistry teacher at East Syracuse-Minoa High School, East Syracuse, NY. She is the advisor to the school's Metric Club, a club dedicated to community service using metric only measurements such as the adopt-a-highway, all 3 kilometers worth. She wrote the following essay about her involvement with the metric system. My passion for the metric system comes from the heart as much as from my scientific need for precision. I grew up in the United States during a time of change and a race to the moon.
