SMI-Texas installs interstand dimension control in bar mill

Structural Metals Inc. (SMI) has installed ABB Control~(IT) Interstand Dimension Control (IDC) at its bar mill in Seguin, Texas.SMI-Texas has introduced the new equipment in its bar mill to achieve closer tolerances, enter new markets and maximize the mill's yield and availability. The robust U-gauge sensor, based on pulsed eddy current technology, is integrated into the IDC system, giving dimensional feedback of the bar passing through it. The interstand dimension control will automatically adjust the set-up of 13 mill stands and the interstand speed on the basis of the data received from the sensors to continuously control the dimensions of the bars in the mill.
