In December 2000 Visakhaphatnam Steel (VSP) awarded a contract for the automation of its 3200 m~3 blast furnace No. 2 to VAI Automation (P) Limited (VAI-APL), an Indian subsidiary of Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI). The contract was awarded as a repeat order based on excellent performance and services provided to VSP for blast furnace No. 1, implemented during the year 2000.The scope of the project included design, engineering, supply of equipment and commissioning of a PLC-based automation system for material handling and charging, including data acquisition for the entire blast furnace. The existing relay-based control systems could thus be replaced.
