Two-stage fuel arc furnace (FAF) -- a new concept for energy optimization in electric steelmaking

The article presents the concept of a new two-stage single bath steel melting process. In the firststage of the process only fuel is used, in the second stage both energy sources - electricity and fuel.This Fuel Arc Furnace (FAF) reduces electricity consumption without decreasing productivity byusing High Power Rotary (HPR) fuel-oxygen burners, carbon injection devices, post combustion andscrap preheaters. The electric energy replacement by cheaper fuel energy will provide a significantreduction in operational and capital costs.
