The complex nature of today's production processes can be mastered with the help of systems which support production engineers in assessing these processes. This support is meant to improve product quality, optimize production and increase plantavailability. A system of this kind was installed within the framework of process automation of the hot wide strip mill at Preussag Stahl AG. The results demonstrate that the diagnostic assistant system, which is integrated into the engineer's workplace,effectively supports the works engineer in his duties. Ongoing improvement and functional expansion adapt the system to increasing requirements.
