Perhaps the most commented-on feature of the international economy during the last two decadeshas been the accelerated globalisation of production and markets. The driving force behind thisphenomenon has been intensified international competition, reflecting post-war progress in theopening of national markets and the substantial gains in efficiency that the use of telecommunicationsand other new technologies have brought. Economic globalisation is reflected in the historicallyunparalleled surges in international trade and investment, often involving new and dynamic actors onthe world stage.
