Taiwanese Builder Opens Direct Import Branch

Several former employees of Hitachi Seki U.S.A., Inc., which closed its Congers, N.Y. office after the parent firm in Japan went bankrupt and was taken over by Mori Seiki, have formed Tong-Tai Seiki U.S.A., Inc. (Valley Cottage, N.Y.). Harry Uchiyama, Yusuf Venjara, and others are starting to import metalcutting machines from their principal, Tong-Tai Machine & Tool Co., Ltd. (Hsien, Taiwan) into North America. Two lines of Tong-Tai machines-an NC lathe and a drill/tap center-had been handled in the U.S. by importer Absolute Machine Tools, Inc. (Lorain, Ohio). Absolute MT's main line is the Johnford brand of machines from Roundtop Machinery Industries Ltd. (Hsien, Taiwan); it also handles products from another Taiwan builder, You Ji Industrial Machines. (Notified back in November that Tong-Tai would set up a direct outlet in the States, Absolute Machine Tools since has become the representative for Argo Lih Chang Machinery Co. Ltd. [Fong Yuan, Taiwan], whose products include a high-speed drilling and tapping center and a vertical MC.)
