Computer-assisted piercer plug design and setting calculation for cross-roll piercers

Piercer plugs are the most important tools for the production of hollow blooms in piercing mills.Their functions are to ensure the geometry of the hollow bloom, uniform wall thickness profile, favourable material flow, low forming resistance and good quality of the inner surface and suppress cracking in the centre of the material. For supporting these tasks SMS Meer has developed a special software program called CAPAS that calculates the piercer plug geometry and the setting of the tools involved in the forming process. It is possible to use it in 2-roll and in 3-roll piercing mills. The program features user guidance throughout the calculation process.
