Automation and process models at the new Wuhan No.2 wide hot strip mill

With a nominal capacity of 4.5 million t/year and strip widths of up to 2,130 mm the new wide hot strip mill No. 2 at Wuhan Iron and Steel Corp. in China stands out from the rest of the mills newly built during the last 10 years. This article primarily deals with the electrical equipment, placing a particular focus on drive systems, automation, operating systems and technological closed-loop control as well as the process control functionality including its effects on various sections within the mill. A special innovative highlight is the MicroStructure Monitor used to calculate and even influence the final material properties.
