An experiment sought to determine whether microalloying ductile iron with vanadium and niobium would have the same beneficial effects as microalloying steel with those same elements. Austempered ductile iron's (ADI) engineering properties, such as tensile strength, elongation and wear resistance, are comparable to that of steel, and the material has been used as a forged steel replacement in several applications, such as crankshafts, camshafts, differential gears, chain links, spiral, ring and pinion gears, and universal joints.
