The design theory of any building component requires the evaluation of three basic elements, namely, causes, effects, and methods of limiting effects. For a structural component, the causes normally include dead load, live load, wind load, thermal load, seismic load, load combinations, and the effects normally include axial stress, bending stress, shear stress, deflection, shear diaphragm stress, combined stresses and support reaction/fastener load. The evaluation of the causes is normally the responsibility of the building code authority. The evaluation of the effects is reliant on the development of the theory of analysis. The evaluation of the methods of limiting effects is normally developed by an industrial association such as AISC and adopted by the building code authority. In a matured industry such as steel, aluminum, or reinforced concrete, the three elements have been well defined.
