When it comes to showroom space, it's hard to beat the metal building approach. That's what architects in Michigan and Virginia found out when researching design approaches for the construction of showrooms for their respective clients-a maker of backyard play structures and a distributor of carpet/flooring. The task for Royal Oak, Ml's Jon Sarkesian Architects was to design a new showroom for Rainbow Recreation of Michigan, located in Lyon Township. Harold Remlinger was the firm's project manager. "The client's needs were very clear when this project began," he explained. "Long, clear spans and ample heights were needed to provided flexibility as the products housed within are quite large and changed regularly. We felt that the characteristics of the steel building suited the needs perfectly. The portal frame style provided free spans from wall to wall and created potential for dramatic ceiling conditions, which we used to full advantage. The inherent nature of the structure also facilitated maximum flexibility regarding glazing design."
