New Visions Headstart Center

The construction of New Visions Headstart represents the initial step in the revitalization of a long-neglected section of Newport. It is located within a 14-acre area that will soon contain a Rhode Island Community College campus and much-needed commercial development. To best meet the needs of the area's residents, the new Headstart facility provides a range of social services, child and family literacy programs, and parenting workshops. To create a school environment that was inviting, stimulating and secure--all within a limited HUD construction budget--the architect designed the new facility as a 19,000 sq. ft., one-story steel box. While the interior spaces are organized around a naturally lit interior atrium/gymnasium, the exterior is segmented into classroom blocks through the use of different colored metal wall panels. The color was an added bonus in terms of their selection, as the primary reasons they were chosen had more to do with durability and maintenance.
