DP World unveils plans for Yarimca container terminal

DP World is boosting productivity, considering consolidation and growing its end-to-end strategy in Turkey. The global supply chain leader opened its Yarimca container terminal in 2016 - DP World wanted to bring a modern, dedicated container facility into a market that was working from finger piers or converted breakbulk facilities. DP World Yarimca chief executive Kris Adams recalls, "It took us some time to commission the terminal and get permits in place but by the time we entered the market, we quickly became a significant player." A key factor within the container terminal market in Turkey is it is very fragmented. Mr Adams points out the container volumes in Turkey total 12M TEU - and this is served by 26 container terminals. He says, "The market is very fragmented, and we believe consolidation needs to happen to gain efficiencies, to create an infrastructure that is more suitable to service bigger volumes. With that, you get economies of scale." Explaining the background to having so many terminals, he says, "It's a story you have all over Turkey - industrial groups have plots of land, and they see the opportunity to build a container terminal and start operating. There is not always the expertise there. Some breakbulk terminals are also converting to container operations. Ultimately, there will be consolidation when concessions expire, and big investments need to be made.
