The subject of the 6 percent import duty on imports of unwrought aluminium into the European Union remains a touchy one for those who believe they are being unfairly penalised outside the protection of the EU and Efta. The Gulf and Latin American producers are perhaps amongst those who feel particularly aggrieved at what they deem to be protectionist forces at work within Europe. Ian Rugeroni, ceo of Dubai Aluminium, was virulent in an attack on the duty which he made during his presentation at MB's 11th International Aluminium Conference in Berlin last week. He said the duty is unjustifiable and the matter makes his blood pressure rise.
