Geneva, Inland set up plate joint venture

GENEVA Steel and Inland's service centre group are to form a 50-50 joint venture that will own and operate a wide coiled plate processing facility in the Chicago area. The planned operation would process mostly Geneva-produced coiled plate into cut plate up to lin thick and up to 96in wide. Making cut plate up to 126in wide is also under consideration. The cost of the new plant was not disclosed pending engineering studies and decisions on the mill's capabilities, including determination of the width. Output of up to 500,000 short tons per year is anticipated, beginning in the first quarter of 1997. The output will be sold to Geneva customers directly or to Inland's midwest-based service centre chains, J.M. Tull and Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, for distribution.
