FOLLOWING a period of decline caused by -depressed international market conditions, Guinea is seeking to increase its bauxite production and increase its competitiveness, according to Namory Conde, technical adviser at the country's ministry of mines and geology. Conde told delegates that Guinea has bauxite reserves of around 20bn tonnes - equivalent to nearly half the world's total deposits - and exported about 14m tonnes in 1995, compared to the 16-17m tonnes exported in the same period by Australia, the world's largest exporter.
