Production has stopped at the 1m tpy Jamalco alumina refinery in Clarendon, Jamaica, following a strike over wages.The plant closed in the second week of October, its joint-venture owner and operator Alcoa has confirmed. The plant, which was operating with a skeleton staff after the strike began on October 10, "closed down on temporary maintenance to ensure the safety of employees", Alcoa confirmed. "We are now in talks with our partner, the Jamaican government and the union to work towards a quick resolution." Supply within Alcoa's own system will not be disrupted, as this can come from another refinery, a spokes-woman said. However, she added, once shut the refinery cannot be reopened quickly.
