TOTALENERGIES has taken on the mantle of stable European oil and gas major with a firm plan for the energy transition, albeit one that does not please everybody. The strategy was to be put before its current and potential financial backers at a formal company investor day on Wednesday. While Shell and BP have been rowing back on the speed of their decarbonisation plans, TotalEnergies is sticking to its playbook. But is it enough? Chief executive Patrick Pouyanne has already won the support of his board at a two-day review carried out at TotalEnergies' Paris headquarters at the end of last week. The French group claims to have found the sweet spot between generating a serious amount of new cash while pivoting into opportunities available through decarbonisation.
