Exterior Material Choice Enhances Durability, Provides Better Look For New Community Center

It was supposed to be clad with anodized aluminum. But thanks to the generosity of financial contributors, Chicago's new Kam L Lui Building was ultimately sheathed in titanium. The result is a building that provides the looks and durability desired by the client and promised by the architect. Studio Gang/O'Donnell Architects of Chicago (now Studio Gang Architects) designed the 38,000 sq. ft. building. It is owned and operated by the Chinese American Service League and functions as a vital support center and social gathering place for Chinese immigrants that are new to the city. Operated within its walls are 14 distinct social service programs including adult and child daycare, job training, counseling and after-school classes. There are also community gathering spaces and administrative offices.
