Curving Art Form--What Architects Need to Know About Designing Curved Roofs

Many metal roofers and fabricators will tell you installing a curved or tapered roof is more an art than a science. Metal curving machines generally have a radius guide on the back of the machine that will indicate the recommended radius for the profile height and the kind of material. But veteran fabricators will tell you these settings will help the operator get close to the radius. The other part of the equation is experience. Copper and aluminum are easier to curve, and you can actually make a circle from a single panel. Steel is not as easy to curve, and it takes practice and experience even when all the settings are correct on the curving machine.
