In 1 968, Vera Calandra traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, in hopes of meeting Padre Pio, a priest Catholics believed could work miracles. Accompanying her were her two small children, one of whom was very sick. Padre Pio blessed the little girl and put his wounded hands upon her head. Upon returning home to Pennsylvania, doctors treating Mrs. Calandra's daughter at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found the young girl's condition to be improving. A rudimentary bladder was growing in place of the one removed during one of the patient's many operations. Many considered it a miracle.
