Aluminum-Clad Buildings Become Centerpiece of Atlanta Art Center's Public Transformation

Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center is considered one of America's preeminent cultural centers. But officials there are not content to rest on past laurels. The center recently underwent 178 million dollars in capital improvements, with the majority of those funds allocated to expanding the campus' crown jewel, the renowned High Museum of Art. The High was founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association and is considered today to be one of the leading art museums in the southeastern United States. It has an extensive anthology of 1 9th-and 20th-century American art; significant holdings of European paintings and decorative art; a growing collection of African-American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art. The museum is also dedicated to supporting and collecting works by southern artists and is distinguished in the fields of folk and self-taught art.
