Hotchkiss School, an independent boarding school for grades 9-12, wanted an addition to the auditorium wing of its main building to house rehearsal halls, practice rooms and classrooms for its rejuvenated music arts program. However it was determined that, while excellent for drama performances, an existing theater would not be suitable for music concerts. Centerbrook Architects and Planners LLC suggested the construction of a new music performance hall that would provide rehearsal space and could be used for other school functions as well. The result-a glass-walled, 715-seat music pavilion-captures dramatic views and adds the uplifting effect of daylight. A double door at grade expands the pavilion out onto a stone terrace and grass lawn for summer concerts. Entrance lounges with panoramic views also house the school's radio station and music technology studio.
