Metal Panels Enhance Dramatic Showcase for Net Zero School

When the 900 students showed up for classes in the newly opened Lady Bird Johnson Middle School in Irving,Texas, last August, they entered a building that promised to produce as much energy as it consumed annually—a net zero building. It was the first net zero public school inTexas, the first net zero middle school in the country and the largest net zero public school in the country. Sangeetha Karthik, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, was the lead architect for Corgan Associates of Dallas. She says: "We felt good about many aspects of the project. It has a lot of sustainable features, but the final thing is the building looks good even without all that. All the green features were just an added layer, if you will."
