While the day of the long distance passenger railroad has given way to other forms of transportation, the life of the commuter rail line is alive and well. The nation's major commuter lines have been expanding and adding stations as suburban sprawl drives more and more workers to use mass transportation to gain access to our major cities. New and different design forms have emerged, hugging the same tracks as their Beaux Arts sisters built during the so-called golden era of passenger rail travel. In many cases, new stations have embraced the essential style of the older architecture, and metal roofs have been incorporated into the classic and modern designs because of their durability, maintenance-free characteristics and their railroad-friendly aesthetics.
