A roadmap to membrane protein structures

"Technical Innovation provides the infrastructure that sustains rapid growth in biology and biochemistry", these were the first words of the inaugural issue of Methods by John Abelson and Melvin Simon in 1990 [1 ]. During that decade, the NIH increased funding support for team-oriented, non-hypothesis driven research like genome sequencing projects. As a result, two major structural biology programs were instituted, NIGMS' structural genomics (The Protein Structure Initiative, PSI) and the Structural Biology Program of the Roadmap Initiative (now known as the Common Fund).
