GREEN GROW THE LITHOPS-O! ABOUT GREEN-BODIED COLOUR FORMS

In my article on red Lithops forms, I omitted to mention the list of names which was published by Vincent Formosa in this Bulletin in 1998, see reference below. I also failed to mention Prof. Andy Young's discussion of pigments in red cultivars (reference below). Although this does not name particular Lithops forms, it is important background to the subject.In the same issue as my previous article, a purplebodied form of L.karasmontana ssp. eberlanzii was published as 'Purper' by Bernd Schldsser, ex C369. The whole body has deep purple pigmentation, unlike the familiar red-topped karasmontana forms such as'Lateritia' (and 'Summitatum'? I'm unsure about the status of that name). Ian Nartowicz considers - and I agree - that "the L.karasmontana cultivars, except 'Purper', should not be classified as R-form Lithops. They are simply natural colour variations such as L.lesliei var. rubrobrunnea, albeit even more obvious since the strong colouring is confined to the top surface" (pers.comm.).
