One of the oddest mesembs must be Cheiridopsis peculiaris. Named "eseloor" (donkey ear) in Afrikaans, only a handful of small populations are currently known m Namaqualand, and it has long been known from just a single small population - probably reason enough for South African conservation authorities to consider it critically endangered. C.peculiaris might not look like any normal member of the genus, but see the fruit and one instantly laiows this aptly-named species is a Cheiridopsis.
