At the end of his excellent rough guide to mesemb names (MSG 23/2), Terry Smale asks what readers think about the use of field numbers in cultivated and interactive contexts. As a thinking or feeling reader I offer my own views, which have had small commercial impacts on my work. Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's I had a tiny business selling lithops seeds. They came direct from Naureen Cole in the form of intact capsules. Having been harvested from the Coles's tamed and professionally pollinated wildlings, the seeds were of superlative quality, as I soon learned by sowing large amounts of them, thus undermining my stock whilst galvanizing my confidence.
