This case study in drainage was shot west of the Naries guest house en route to Spektakel Pass. Hidden in the grit was a vast congregation of C.pellucidum var. terricolor, one of the westernmost populations. Other species take over further west, e.g., C.auriflorum subsp. turbiniforme and C.tantillum subsp. lindenianum. Figs 21.6 & 21.7 Conophytum obcordellum near Klawer We didn't see any "Thunberg slept here" signs -- but he must have been quite near. Perhaps as he roasted a wildebeest he noted Conophytum obcordellum, just as we did, nibbling our waxed apples some 223 years later. The form of C, obcordellum near Klawer comes quite close to the one seen in Salm-Dyck (Mesemb. 1, fig. 2) - i.e., it's halfway between the ornate (picturarum) and plain(giftbergense) types. This slide was taken in midwinter and gives one a good idea of just how wet an ideal habitat can be.
