The international scientific conference "Current Problems in Electric Steelmaking," devoted to the 300th anniversary of Ural metallurgy, was convened in Cheylabinsk on September 25-27 of last year. The conference involved the participation of more than 126 specialists from different metallurgical plants and organizations, scientific research institutes, and universities in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Germany. A total of 140 papers were presented during the meeting. At the plenary session, D. Ya. Povolotskii, V. E. Roshchin, and N. V. Mal'kov (YuUrGU, Chelyabinsk) acquainted the conferees with the major milestones in the three centuries of Ural metallurgy. Their report noted in particular that the ferrous metallurgical products produced in the Ural during the first half of the XVIII Century were the best in the world in terms of quality and the technical sophistication of the manufacturing process. Also emphasized were the key contributions of industrial engineers and metallurgists N. D. Demidov, V. N. Tatishchev, P. P. Anosoy, P. M. Obukhov, K. N. Polenov, G. I. Nosov, P.I. Korobov, V. E. Grum-Grzhimailo, I. A. Sokolov, N. I. Dobrokhotov, A. N. Morozov, and others. Academic and scientific research institutes and planning organizations also played important roles in the growth of Ural metallurgy during the indicated period.
