Because of its high insulation performance, SF{sub}6 gas has been widely used as a major insulation medium for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and high voltage power equipment. Recently, however, the SF6 gas began to be recognized as a gas that yields an effect of global warming. In this connection, regulations have been called for in order to restrict the total use and discharge volume of this type of gas in the future. Against such a technical and historical background, the application of an SF{sub}6/N{sub}2 gas mixture is being investigated as an insulation gas for high voltage power equipment. This paper deals with the attitude of Meidensha Corporation as it addresses itself to the reduction of the use of SF{sub}6 gas, the feasibility of application to the SF{sub}6/N{sub}2 gas mixture insulated power equipment, and the trends for reducing the use of SF{sub}6 gas. Our research introduced in this paper has been furthered under the guidance of the Okubo Laboratory (Department of electrical engineering at the Nagoya University).
