Because of the rising consideration to the global environment, electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have tended to be accepted even by general users in the past few years. Along with such tendencies, the EV-related development and improvement are being aggressively promoted in automotive industries. In response to the contemporary atmosphere, Meidensha Corporation has manufactured a variety of EV-related testing facilities. In fact, the company has a record of a large volume of supply. The motor used in an EV has a comparatively simple construction. Therefore, according to the design concept of the vehicle on which the motor is loaded, so many motors are actually designed and manufactured and the number of motor models is actually greater than that of ordinary reciprocating engines. The technical trends, which are common to the EV motors, are the expansion of motor capacities resulting from an increase in EV sizes and the rise in the speed in order to attain lightness and compactness. Recently, Meidensha Corporation developed a high-speed FREC dynamometer (EVDY) with a maximum speed of 20,000min{sup}(-1), to be introduced below. EVDY assures the features of large capacity and high speed, designed to be most suitable for EV motor testing.
