Narasin poisoning in a flock of slaughter turkeys [Polish]

Monitoring was performed on a flock of 15-week old slaughter turkeys. The birds had mistakenly been given the feed of broilers containing 70 ppm of narasin. Massive losses were recorded on the third day and the feed was immediately changed. In the flock of approximately 4.3 thousand female and male turkeys the number of dead birds was: 790 female turkeys and 396 male turkeys. The smaller losses in male turkeys were due to the 12 hr delay in giving the poisoned feed. Within 6 days, i.e. from poisoning to slaughter the total number of dead birds was: 1373 female turkeys and 601 male turkeys, which was 31.9% and 14.1% of the flock, respectively. 6 days after the poisoning the body weight had dropped by 1.2 kg in female turkeys and by 2 kg in male turkeys. The following clinical symptoms were observed: loss of appetite, feather ruffling, difficult breathing, diarrhea and flaccid paralysis of wings and legs. Post-mortem examination showed edema of liver and kidneys, hepatohaemia and renal hyperemia, uric acid diathesis of kidneys, enlargement of gall-bladder and catarrhal inflammation of the small intestines.
