摘要

The "e-Japan Project" is currently being promoted by the Japanese Government. Among the items of this project, the Geographic Information System (GIS hereafter) is ranked as one of the most important themes. At present, the GIS is at the second stage of the 4-year plan of the "GIS Action Program 2002 - 2005." Likewise in Japan, there have been many trials of GIS applications in a variety of industrial fields. In this connection, general interest has been rapidly increased.
