Problems in the global environment and activities for the acquisition of the ISO14001 certificate

The most pressing and important subject mankind is currently confronting is our attitude to the problems in the global environment. At the international conference on environment and development held in 1992 (Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro), discussions were focused on the preservation of the global environment. At this conference, an action plan of human beings for the sustainable development was adopted by the name of Agenda 21. Based on such contemporary trends, the Construction & Engineering Division of Meidensha Corporation has long intended to contribute to recyclable society structuring where loads can be minimal on the global environment. Based also on Meidensha's basic environmental ideology (to make the earth comfortable to live for human beings and society), this Division is reviewing its policy and ideology from the beginning in regard to its stance toward the approach to the environmental problems. As a concrete activity to get into the environmental problems, the Division acquired the IS014001 certificate in December 2000, and since then it has addressed itself to the solution of environmental problems in accordance with the requirements of this standard. This paper introduces various environmental problems arising in the middle of the activities of this Division, how the ISO certificate was acquired by the Division as a constructor organization, and the management achieved after the certificate acquisition.
