Detection of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella sp rods in fish and fish products using the mini Vidas system

The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of microbial contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella sp. rods of fresh fish, smoked fish and sushi. Samples were purchased from retailers and restaurants. Indications were performed using a standard method, i.e. a horizontal method for detection and quantitative determination of Listeria monocytogenes according to PN-EN ISO 11290-1:1999 / A1: 2005 and Salmonella sp. according to the standard ISO-6579: 2003 and the mini Vidas immunoassay (bioMerieux) method. Mini-VIDAS is a fully automated system that uses fluorescent ELFA (Enzyme Linked Fluorescent Assay) technology for detection of pathogen antigens in food. It can be a rapid screening method alternative to time consuming classical ISO procedures based on isolation and identification. The mini-VIDAS-LMO detected 4 positive samples. The classical method confirmed these results for two samples. The mini-VIDAS-SLM detected 2 positive samples but they were excluded according to the classical method as a confirmation procedure. The study showed that the mini-Vidas can be used for such studies; however, it is necessary to confirm the results of the standard method, because it can give false positive results.
