Residues of antibiotics and other inhibitory substances were determined in animal tissues and milk samples using standard microbiological methods. A total of 9,388 animal tissue samples collected from pigs, bovine, poultry and fish revealed the presence of inhibitory substances only in three samples (0.032% of all samples examined). The results indicate that residues of anti-bacterial substances may only sporadically be observed in animal tissues and they are not a serious threat for consumers. Additionally, a total of 9,682 and 616 samples of raw and retail milk, respectively, were also examined. The samples of raw milk were obtained as collected milk from individual farms and from purchasing centers, while the samples of retail milk were obtained from dairy product factories. The examination revealed the presence of inhibitory substances in 0.6% and 0.97% of raw and retail milk samples, respectively. These data indicate that the presence of inhibitory substances has tended to decrease since 1996. However it is still higher than in countries of Western Europe.
