Analiza arytmii serca psow badanych w latach 1996-2001 w Klinice Chorob Koni,Psow i Kotow wydzialu Medycyny Weterynaryjnej AR we WroctawiuAnalysis of arrhythmia of the heart in dogs examined between 1996-2001 in the Clinic of Horse, Dog and Cat Disea
The absence of statistical data illustrating cardiovascular disease is a serious gap in Polish Veterinary cardiology. A statistical analysis of arrhythmia cases was carried out in the Clinic of Horse, Dog and Cat Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Wroclaw Agricultural University in order to determine their relation to breed predisposition. The research material included 2005 dogs - patients of the above clinic examined between 1996-2001. The study compared dogs of 44 breeds, the highest percentage being mix-breed: 10.27% (70 dogs), Dachshunds: 9.69% (66 dogs) and German Shepherds: 4.84% (33 dogs). Arrhythmia was diagnosed in 272 dogs out of the total number of 681 dogs which had been examined for cardiology symptoms (40% cardiology patients, 13.5% of all animals). Sixteen kinds of arrhythmia were recognized. The most common deviation in the ECG record was heart rate disturbances: tachycardia occurred in 150 dogs (42.97%), the remaining 43 dogs (12.32%) demonstrating bradycardias. In addition the examinations revealed 11.74% cases of arterial fibrillation, 8.9% of ventricular premature complex, and 5.45% of arterial premature beats. Supreventricular arrhythmia dominated at 82.78%. The study also revealed that small and miniature breeds demonstrated sinus tachycardia as the dominating arrhythmia (74.35% small arrhythmic dogs). Large breeds, on the other hand, demonstrated a predisposition to arterial fibrillation (65.7.1 arrhythmia in large dogs). Predisposition to arrhythmia was not linked in any way to the dog's sex. Breeds which are most predisposed to arrhythmia are: Newfoundland 36.36%, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher (all 30%) and Boxer (25%). The majority of secondary arrhythmia are most often provoked by respiratory disorders: bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngitis, tracheitis as well as liver diseases.
