Environmental Chlamydia - potential pathogens for humans and animals.

To date, research on Chlamydia (intracellular bacteria causing many diseases in man and animals) has concentrated on pathogenic Chlamydia sp. and Chlamydophila sp. that form the Chlamydiaceae family of the order Chlamydiales. Recently, due to molecular biology techniques, the taxonomy of the order Chlamydiales has been extended to 3 new families, Parachlamydiaceae, Simkaniaceae and Waddliaceae. These families include bacteria that have been isolated as endosymbionts of protozoa, sludge, insects, isopods, fish, bats and cattle and as contaminants of cell cultures. Environmental Chlamydia are included among these microorganisms and considered to be potential pathogens of humans and animals..
