The aim of the study was to determine the adhesion ability and biofilm formation on the surface of a urinary catheter (siliconised latex) by Y. enterocolitica strains representing different biogroups while taking into account their origin. The method used was based on the estimation of the degree of reduction of TTC substrate to insoluble red formazan, carried out by metabolically active microorganisms. Among Y. enterocolitica strains isolated from humans, 38.3% revealed adhesion, 28.3% of which were highly adhesive. In case of strains from pigs, 68.4% adhered to the examined biomaterial. A high degree of adhesion was demonstrated by 31.6% of the strains. A biofilm was observed in 32 strains (53.3%) isolated from humans and in 40 strains (70.1%) isolated from pigs. A high degree of TTC reduction was shown by 18.32% of human strains and 26.3% of pig strains. The percentage of Y. enterocolitica strains which had adhesion and biofilm formation ability was higher in the case of strains from pigs. The percentage of biogroup 4 strains forming a biofilm was higher in comparison with the percentage of adhering strains, while the percentage of biogroup 2 and 1A strains was similar regarding these two abilities.
