FimH protein is a lectin-like adhesive subunit of type 1 mannose-sensitive fimbriae found on the surface of most Enterobacteriaceae species and involved in the adhesion of bacteria to host tissues. We have cloned the fimH gene of S. enterica serovar enteritidis using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with primers complementary to the known fimH gene of S. enterica serovar typhimurium. The sequencing of the PCR product revealed a high degree of sequence similarity (about 97-99.9%) between the fimH gene of S. enteritidis and other known fimH genes of several Salmonella serovars (S. typhimurium, S. gallinarum biovar gallinarum, S. gallinarum biovar pullorum, S. choleraesuis and S. typhi). The analysis of 13 avian and 8 human S. enteritidis isolates revealed an enormous degree of conservation in sequenced fimH genes, with no single nucleotide substitution found among the studied samples..
