This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy (protective value) of the deleted Aujeszky's disease (AD) vaccine in pigs against herpesvirus suis type 1 (SHV-1) infection when administered intradermally (I.D.) vs. the intramuscular (I.M.) route. 21 eight-week-old piglets were divided into 3 equal groups and vaccinated twice in the 12th and 16th weeks of age with deleted vaccine Porcilis Begonia (Intervet) at 2.0 ml I.M. (Group I) or 0.2 ml I.D. using needle-less apparatus SERENA, model SD 1-2, Emplast, Italy (Group II). The piglets in Group K (control) received phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at 2.0 ml I.M. 70 days after the first vaccination, all the pigs were infected with a virulent strain of Northern Ireland Aujeszky-3 virus (NIA-3) intranasally at a dose of 105.5 TCID50 by instilling 0.5 ml of the viral suspension into each nostril. It was shown that the I.D. route of vaccination against AD was equally effective as the I.M. one in protecting pigs against experimental infections with virulent SHV-1. The vaccine administered I.D. even at a dose 10 times less than I.M. fulfils accepted standard criteria of protective value assessment for AD vaccines. The results of the vaccination related to postinfected clinical reactions and arrested growth periods in both groups are very similar. Both vaccination routes can be performed conversely or parallelly in the realization of AD "vaccination-eradication" programmes.
