The usefulness of iron preparations for the prevention of iron-deficiency anemia in newborn piglets as well as their effect on the parameters of nonspecific immune responses and acute phase proteins have been studied. Two iron preparations, Ferrovet and Suibiofer-Se, proved to be highly active in restoring the disturbed hematological parameters and remedying physiological iron deficiency. The kinetics of cellular and humoral parameters of nonspecific immunity and C-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin (Hp) in the newborn piglets depended on the serum concentration of ionized iron. Remedying iron-deficiency in newborns in the first days of their lives restored the disturbed parameters of nonspecific immunity. The serum level of CRP and Hp proved to be valuable parameters for evaluating the intensity of subclinic inflammation and the efficiency of iron preparations for the prevention of iron-deficiency anemia in piglets.
