In my 'previous life' as an Airworthiness Engineer with British Aerospace at Warton, I tried to get a flight in one of the company's fast jets - a Lightning or Jaguar. However, my requests came to naught-there was a rumour that the test pilots did not want the responsibility of a 'passenger'. They were concerned that should anything go seriously wrong they would have to stay with the aircraft until the other person had ejected.This was certainly not Jimmy Dell's experience when he flew with flight test engineer Graham Elkington in a Lightning T.5 on July 12, 1965.
