The aim of the study was to compare the distribution of BHV1.1 and BHV1.2 strains in various tissues of rabbits during latent infection. When using PCR with external primers, the presence of the Cooper strain (subtype BHV1.1) was only detected in samples of the trigeminal ganglion. When using nested PCR, positive reactions were obtained in samples of the trigeminal ganglion, cerebellum, spinal cord, ophthalmic nerve, tonsils and lungs. The K-22 strain (subtype BHV1.2) was found in the minority of samples. The DNA of the K-22 strain was detected in the trigeminal ganglion in 2 out of 6 infected rabbits during the first PCR reaction. When PCR with internal primers was applied, however, samples of the trigeminal ganglion, cerebral cortex, cerebellum and ophthalmic nerve reacted positively.
